Want to Play Android Games Without Constant Ads? Try This Setting
Free mobile games can be entertaining, but frequent advertisements often interrupt the experience.
An advertisement may appear after completing a level, opening a menu, or only a few seconds after the game begins. In some games, watching advertisements can eventually feel more time-consuming than playing.
Before uninstalling the game, you can try a simple Android setting. This method does not require another application, root access, or permanent changes to your phone.
The feature we will use is called Private DNS.
Why Do Free Games Display So Many Ads?
Many mobile games are available without an initial payment because their developers earn revenue from advertising. This business model allows people to download and play the games for free.
The number of advertisements, however, varies between games. Some display them occasionally, while others show one after almost every level.
Games normally connect to advertising servers through the internet to retrieve advertisements. A filtering DNS service can prevent some of those requests from reaching their destination.
This method does not change the game itself. It only affects connections to certain addresses associated with advertisements and trackers.
A Quick Solution Using Private DNS
Android includes a Private DNS feature that can work with both Wi-Fi and mobile data. The location and name of the menu may vary according to the phone manufacturer and Android version.
Using the Settings search function is usually the easiest way to find it.
Step 1: Find Private DNS
Open Settings and tap the search box near the top of the page.
Enter:
DNS
Choose Private DNS from the search results.
If you prefer to find it manually, it is commonly located under:
Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS
On some devices, you may find it under:
Settings → More Connections → Private DNS
Step 2: Change the Automatic setting
The Private DNS page will usually display options such as:
Off
Automatic
Private DNS provider hostname
Select Private DNS provider hostname. Depending on your device, the option may have a slightly different name, such as Specified Private DNS.
Step 3: Enter the DNS server
Enter the following address:
dns.adguard-dns.com
Check the spelling carefully. Do not add https://, spaces, or a forward slash.
Tap Save when you are finished.
This is the ad-blocking server hostname currently listed in the official AdGuard DNS setup guide.
How to Check Whether It Works
After saving the setting, completely close the game from your recent applications. Open it again and play through several levels.
Observe whether advertisements that normally appear are still being displayed.
If the number of advertisements has been reduced, the DNS filter is working. You may now have a more comfortable Android gaming experience.
The Tradeoff: Rewarded Videos May Stop Working
Many mobile games give players optional rewards for watching videos. These rewards may allow you to:
Revive a character
Continue after losing
Receive free coins
Open a reward chest
Double your results
Obtain an item without paying
While the filtering DNS is enabled, these videos may fail to load. The button might become inactive, keep loading, or display a message saying that no video is available.
This does not necessarily mean that your phone or game is broken. The DNS may be blocking the advertising server responsible for delivering the rewarded video.
When Should You Disable Private DNS?
You do not have to remove the DNS address permanently. Temporarily switch it off when you want to use a rewarded advertisement.
Follow these steps:
Open Settings.
Return to Private DNS.
Select Automatic or Off.
Close and reopen the game.
Play the rewarded video.
After collecting the reward, you can reactivate dns.adguard-dns.com if you want to continue playing with fewer advertising interruptions.
This gives you control over the setting. Enable it for a quieter gaming experience and temporarily disable it when you want an optional video reward.
What If Android Will Not Save the Address?
A small typing mistake can prevent Android from connecting to the DNS provider. Confirm that the address is:
dns.adguard-dns.com
If it still does not work, try the following:
Check for unwanted spaces
Confirm that your internet connection is active
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
Enable Airplane Mode briefly and turn it off again
Return Private DNS to Automatic before trying again
Restart your phone if necessary
Older Android devices may not include the Private DNS menu. Certain internet networks may also restrict connections to specific DNS providers.
What If the Game Cannot Connect?
Games sometimes use third-party services for account login, progress synchronization, or additional content. DNS filtering can occasionally interfere with one of these connections.
Return Private DNS to Automatic if the game cannot log in, save progress, or connect normally after the setting is enabled.
Avoid making an in-game purchase while the connection is unstable. Make sure the game is operating normally first.

Is This the Same as Using a Modified Game?
No.
Changing Private DNS does not modify the application, provide illegal items, or alter game data. It only filters network requests through the selected DNS provider.
You should still choose a trustworthy service because your device’s domain requests will pass through that provider. Avoid random DNS addresses posted by unknown sources.
If you regularly enjoy a particular game, purchasing its official Remove Ads option remains the best way to eliminate advertisements while supporting the developer—provided the option is available and affordable.
Conclusion
You do not always need an ad-blocking application to reduce interruptions while playing Android games. The Private DNS feature included in your phone settings can provide a simple alternative.
Find Private DNS, choose the custom provider option, and enter:
dns.adguard-dns.com
The method can reduce many advertisements, although the results will not be identical in every game. Rewarded videos may also become unavailable while the DNS is active.
Temporarily return the setting to Automatic whenever you need to watch a video to revive your character or collect a reward. Once you understand this tradeoff, you can decide when the DNS filter is useful for you.
