Obesity Can Trigger Menstrual Disorders

Hi reader,

Dr.  Riyan Hari Kurniawan, Sp.OG, Subsp.  FER, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at the Dr. National Hospital.  Cipto Mangunkusumo, stated that obesity can cause hormonal disorders which have an impact on menstrual pattern irregularities.

"One of the causes of irregular menses, from our experience, is that there are many hormonal disorders in teenagers or young people because of the problem of overweight or obesity," said Riyan in a health discussion, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, October 18 2023.

Riyan said that the cause of menstrual irregularities can be identified through an ultrasound examination by a gynecologist.

Ultrasound results can show lumps such as myomas or thickenings in the uterus, which can then be treated by thinning the uterine wall or other treatment.

If these signs are not found, it is likely that menstruation is irregular due to hormonal disorders, often due to being overweight.

To balance hormones, patients are usually advised to reduce their intake of foods rich in carbohydrates and salt and increase their consumption of high fiber foods.

"For example, foods that are high in fiber, high in protein, then we avoid foods that are high in complex carbohydrates, then high in saturated fat, high in salt, add more vegetables, more fruit, increase physical activity, for example," said Riyan.

Furthermore, Riyan stated that the normal range for the menstrual cycle each month is between 24 to 38 days, with the duration of menstruation in one month not exceeding 8 days.  Normal menstrual blood volume can be seen from the frequency of changing sanitary napkins.

If someone has to change sanitary napkins more often in a day because of the larger blood volume, or if the duration of their menstruation exceeds 2 weeks, according to Riyan, this indicates a disturbance in the menstrual pattern.

"For example, this woman has normal menstruation, once a month and then the normal duration is 5 days, however, she has a lot of blood every day so she can change sanitary napkins 5-6 times.  "This also includes menstrual pattern disorders," said Riyan.

For mothers who have just given birth, menstrual patterns can change and may not stabilize for several months, especially due to the influence of the breastfeeding process

If a mother breastfeeds at a high frequency, namely around eight times a day or every three hours, it is likely that she will not menstruate for the first six months.  However, after the breastfeeding period ends, which is around 1 or 2 years, the menstrual cycle is expected to return to normal.

"If after giving birth a year or two the menstrual cycle does not return to normal, well that is not the effect of giving birth.  "It's best to immediately check with a doctor to find out the exact cause," said the doctor who graduated from the University of Indonesia.

Riyan emphasized that women who feel there is a disturbance in their menstrual cycle should consult a gynecologist before deciding to take menstrual-stimulating drugs or drinks.  Doctors can provide suggestions or actions to improve the patient's lifestyle.
